Runescape hackers arrested.
An interesting story on the BBC News pages today:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8386003.stm
Seems that at least one company is taking account hacking seriously!
An interesting comment too saying that as gold farming/botting gets harder, the "thieves" turn to other methods of obtaining the gold to sell.

Jagex is indeed committed very seriously to go that far. And the e-crime unit was a bit lucky, although I'm sure it's been a long and painful investigation. It sends a strong message to UK MMO crowd, possibly US too.
If only they could do the same in some Asian countries...
EDIT: it's well-known that hackers use "parallel routes" to get whatever they can. Pro scammer-phishers are close to being software hackers, the same ones that target big corporations and have to launder money via real-life bad guys.

Not quite, there is an optional subscription plan. If you believe the numbers thats around 1 million players a month.
Anyway, good to see this kind of action being taken.

This is very worrying to me, especially this part:

You work, possibly for years, putting in time and effort to be able to buy a console, TV or car. That's the difference - stealing that item essentially means stealing that work effort. Theft is illegal as an insurance that the reward for your work effort towards improving society will not be taken away from you.
In a game, you do not work. You play. Or at least, you should. A game should not be your job. Stolen accounts should be reinstated and returned to their rightful owners, yes, but on the basis of protecting their fun, not their time and effort.

Runescape is a grind fest top class. It IS a job with tedious repetitive tasks to gain little amount of exp. I know, I've played it for 1 year, through the age of 14.

QFT x 100.... no make that 1,000...
Runescape is an unbelievable grindfest. You think GW is a grindfest... not EVEN close, not even in the same galaxy. Want to do a simple quest? You have to spend HOURS maybe even DAYS gathering up the items you MUST HAVE for the quest, but oh wait... you don't have lvl 40 fishing, but wait, you also need lvl 60 mining and lvl 45 magic. And the magic system stinks like a bazillion rotting corpses.
I played it for about a year because I didn't have a good computer. As soon as I replaced my old computer, I ditched Runescape so fast and didn't look back.
I have to say, though, Jagex was always good about going after bots and hackers, but I think they create the problem because their game is *such* a grindfest to the nth degree. I mean, people are willing to grind a bit, but EVERYTHING in Runescape is a grind. EVERYTHING. Walking around and talking is free, but everything else is a grind.
end of rant

^This sums up it up perfectly and yet there are people who are still drawn to runescape(the world has gone to hell in a hand-basket)...and yeah...so um how long till the rest of the hackers and RMT's get the message cause hackers getting arrested is epic win imo?

I think I played RS for about a week, many years ago.
Walking around felt like grind too. Worsened by a stupid stamina bar.

100 millions of accounts. That counts anyone who has made an account and gave up after 5 minutes. Like myself.

Thank god there's a company out there taking the appropriate actions against hackers. Arena.Net could do good in calling up RuneScape and taking a few classes from them.
